Focus On: Malcolm Swettenham

This week, our "Focus On" series highlights a true Brookweald Cricket Club stalwart, Malcolm Swettenham. A second-team regular and a cornerstone of our squad, Malcolm’s exceptional performances over the last few seasons have earned him the admiration of teammates and opponents alike.

A Season to Remember

Last season Malcolm cemented his name in the club’s history books, becoming Brookweald’s leading run-scorer with an impressive 511 runs in just 11 games. His standout moment came with a superb century (109 runs) against Epping Foresters—a performance that earned him the prestigious Jon Mills Trophy for Performance of the Season.

From Australia to Brookweald

Malcolm’s cricketing journey began long before his record-breaking season. He joined Brookweald in 1998 after returning from a three-year stint in Australia. While living Down Under, Malcolm played for Barnawartha North, a team with a quirky homage to Dennis Lillee—starting every game with nine slips until a run was scored! He fondly recalls running into bowl, only to end up chasing balls to the cover boundary, embodying the fun and unpredictability of grassroots cricket.

All-Round Contribution

Malcolm’s contributions extend beyond his batting. Over the years, he has taken on various roles, including skippering the second team and filling in for the first and third teams when needed. While his early days at Brookweald saw him as a fiery opening bowler, Malcolm now channels his energy into his batting as age (grudgingly) catches up.

Beyond Cricket

Off the field, Malcolm is just as dynamic. A chartered accountant specialising in helping financially struggling companies, Malcolm’s professional expertise is a testament to his problem-solving skills and resilience. He is also a dedicated family man, married to Jayne, and a passionate sports enthusiast. When not at the crease, Malcolm enjoys cycling, following Formula 1, and supporting Arsenal—proof that even the best problem-solvers sometimes back a lost cause!
