Brookweald 2nd XI vs Writtle CC, 2nd XI

This week at the Weald, Brookweald 2nd XI played host to Writtle 2nd XI on what was the hottest day of the year so far. Brookweald skipper Wolfe won the toss and decided to bat, much to the relief of the rest of the team.

The first wicket fell early, but Swettenham joined Wolfe and the two put on a masterclass of power hitting and running between the wickets. They put on 237 runs before Swettenham was out for 144, hitting 23 fours in his magnificent innings.

Wolfe was on track for a century, but he fell just three runs short, out LBW for 97. This is the second time this season that Wolfe has been denied a century in the 90s both time LBW.

The Writtle attack pulled things in towards the end, taking regular wickets. Carson took 3 for 16 and Pavit took 5 for 26. Brookweald were all out for 292.

The new ball was entrusted to the ever-dependable Hurrel. The veteran opening bowler had had zero luck this season, with numerous chances being spilled. Today was a different story, as Brookweald's fielders turned up. Wicketkeeper Climpson ably supported the bowlers with a fine performance of 2 catches and 2 stumpings. The rest of the fielders kept things tight in the field, helping Hurrel and the rest of the attack keep the pressure on.

Wickets were shared around, with Hurrel's 3 for 22 being the pick of the bunch. Excellent slow bowling spells from Forrest (4.2 overs, 3 for 21) and Hudu (8 overs, 2 for 34) ensured that Writtle were never really in the chase. Their reply petered out and they were all out for 127 in the 32nd over.

Brookweald won by an impressive 166 runs taking a maximum points haul to continue the march up the table.
