Brookweald 1st XI vs Epping Foresters CC, 1st XI

On a muggy Saturday afternoon, Brookweald 1st XI were looking to bounce back from their defeat the previous week. Captain Baird lost the toss and Brookweald were put into the dirt. Initially, it looked a good toss to win for Epping as they put on 40 for the 1st wicket, with Sam Needham and Sam Mcguiness providing a solid platform. However, a change of ends and a change of fortune saw Captain Baird take regular wickets with some good catching from his teammates. He ended up taking a 4fer, yes you read that right he took a 4fer. He was ably supported by Finch, Nurul and Ali as they all picked up a couple of wickets each as Epping were skittled out for 150. A special mention to Farhan who kept exceedingly well.

The sweltering conditions continued as Brookweald looked to chase down a rather modest target of 151. However, what ensued can only be described as nasty, sickening and calamitous. Our opening batsmen Wasim was very watchful as he faced the first few balls. It proved to be a little too watchful as he took keeping an eye on the ball to a new level. The ball reared up off a good length and smashed Wasim straight in the eye. A truly sickening blow which felled Wasim. For a split moment, time stood still, and everyone was in shock. Dan Finch did his best Hasslehoff impression as he dashed onto the pitch as if he was a baywatch lifeguard with his grey locks flapping it the air, whilst on the pitch Alfie Hedges cradled Wasim in his bossom. Much to their credit, the Epping players sprung into action to attend to Wasim providing an ice pack and first aid materials. Wasim was taken off the pitch to be attended to. The innings continued with all the incoming batters looking for helmets to wear. Once again though, the Brookweald batters showed their frailties as they offered chance after chance to the Epping fielders, some were taken others were spilled. Despite 38 from Finch and a swashbuckling 32 from Farhan, the Brookweald batting wilted under the heat and crumbled to an embarrassing 119 all out. Another dismal batting display resulting in back to back defeats. Eddie Newland was the star for Epping has he picked 5 wickets for 32 runs from his 9 overs. Adams, Hurwood and Mcguinnes also chipped in with wickets.

In all seriousness, we do hope Wasim will be ok and back to playing cricket soon. Thoughts are with him at this time.
